Rooted in History, Inspired by Adventure
The San Marcos River website was created as an extension of our passion for preserving history, celebrating local culture, and sharing the beauty of this part of Central Texas with others. Created by the same team behind Western 1924 Lofts, this platform was designed to guide you in discovering everything that makes the San Marcos River region so unforgettable.
This area is unique, featuring spring-fed rivers and century-old architecture. Here, every activity gives you the chance to connect with something real. Western 1924 focuses on offering a unique place to stay in historic Martindale, while San Marcos River was created to offer the bigger picture: where to explore, what to do, and the best way to experience this region.
How Western 1924 Lofts Began
Our story is one of resilience, restoration, and appreciation for history. Originally, this site was home to a lively mercantile store in the late 1800s. It was a hub for commerce in Martindale. However, in 1918, a devastating fire swept through the area and burned the original wooden structure to ashes.
The Martindale Motor Corporation built a new structure in 1924, a sturdy two-story masonry landmark. This ushered a new era of business and over the decades, the building housed everything from a car dealership and service station to a Masonic Lodge, a post office, and even a boxing gym. Although, as time passed, the once bustling space fell into disrepair and was eventually deemed unsafe in 2017, facing possible demolition.
Determined to preserve this piece of Martindale’s history, Maury Domengeaux and Steve Schlossareck purchased the building in 2019 and completely restored and transformed it. Every detail was thoughtfully revived to honor the past while still breathing new life into the space. It was completed in 2023, now standing as a vibrant centerpiece in downtown Martindale.
Western 1924 Lofts is more than just a place to stay—it is a symbol of determination and a living testament to the town’s rich history. We offer guests a unique opportunity to experience a beautifully restored landmark, while still enjoying modern comforts and high-end amenities. We feel privileged to share this space with those who appreciate its story, craftsmanship, and charm.
